Using an easy seven-step outline any subject you choose whether it is a broad-general subject such as World War II or a precise subject like Whale Watching both can be narrowed and focused into a short written piece. Plus this outline can be adjusted to fit your specific writing style and needs.

Choose and Develop a Topic
Start by analyzing ideas you are interested in whether it be agriculture, environment issues, breeds of horses, oil and gas in the Middle East, or history of wars and put these down on a piece of paper. As soon as you have a couple of subject ideas put down on paper, draw a line and write in secondary subjects below the heading wither in a bubble format or basic outline. If the topic is still too general, you may want to discuss your idea with a colleague, editor, instructor or publisher. By discussing your topic idea with another person you will either be able to narrow your focus or trash this topic idea. If your topic is too large such as World War II, you will want to limit your topic idea and break it into smaller topics. Some of those topics could be timeframe (third year of fighting), a category of people (farmers, factory workers, suppliers, etc.), or a specific event (Japanese invasion of China).

Find Background Information
The key topic idea put down on a piece of paper, you will want to put together a set of keywords. Write two sentences pertaining to the main idea of your topic. For example describe the different variations of Santa Claus that exists across cultures. Your keywords will be: Santa Claus, variations, cultures.

Utilize your directory of keywords to lead you as you start your exploration using encyclopedias, books, periodicals, video and the internet. You may want to try different combinations of keywords in your searches to gain better results.

Find Books and Videos
With your subject idea, a piece of paper and a pen, go to the university or local library to start looking for books, encylopedias, periodicals, videos and the internet. Remember to include the librarian as they are an invaluable resource and may point you towards new materials on your topic idea.

Find Internet Resources
Carry out an internet search of the subject idea to investigate options and assist narrow the focus of your key subject idea. Beware of using the Internet as your only resource as there are thousands of websites that are personal opinion rather than factual information.

Avoid Plagiarism
Obtain approaches to stay away from plagiarism in your article particularly when using internet sources. Do not present another person’s information or words as your own. And remember by changing words or using a thesaurus to substitute words is still plagiarism because the original idea is not your own. Document anything you borrow and include direct quotations, paraphrases, pieces of information, and ideas according to the MLA Handbook, to avoid potential plagiarism issues.’

Cite your Sources
There are a number of methods and styles you can select from to mention your sources. Before completing your assignment, article, document or research paper ask your editor, instructor or publisher what formatting and style guide you are to be using: MLA, APA, CPA and Turabian styles.
